Cloud Hosting vs On-Premise: What is the difference?

With cloud hosting, the software is provided, updated and maintained by the provider. Accordingly, you do not have to worry about updates or new hardware – all of this is part of the license fees in the “SaaS” model.

On-premise, on the other hand, means that you run the software directly on your own servers. This gives you full control over your data, but also requires more responsibility for maintenance, updates and security.

The question of cost depends heavily on the individual requirements of your company. Cloud solutions have lower entry costs and do not require your own infrastructure.

On-premise hosting, on the other hand, requires an initial investment for your own IT infrastructure. However, this can pay off in the long term – especially if data protection and control are paramount.

The biggest disadvantage of cloud hosting is the manufacturer’s server location. Some DAM providers operate their software on offshore servers outside the EU, some of which are not GDPR-compliant. This can give rise to potential compliance and data protection concerns, as well as security risks. At the same time, this form of hosting is associated with ongoing fees for operation, maintenance and updates.

The biggest disadvantage is the need for high-performance hardware. If the company does not yet have a compatible IT infrastructure, corresponding one-off costs must be planned for.
